With social networking more popular than ever, more entrepreneurs today are turning to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to build and market their brands. In fact, social networking remains one of the fastest ways for up and coming business owners to stake their claims in the entrepreneurial marketplace.
However, as with all forms of professional behavior, these entrepreneurs may be well advised to conduct themselves with caution and respect while they connect to their online audiences. By following these rules of conduct while tweeting or posting to their followers on these social media sites, entrepreneurs can be assured of remaining in the public’s good graces and building successful brands that will attract their desired clientele.
Use Intriguing, Yet Inoffensive Hashtags
Many people who use Twitter and Facebook today end their posts with hashtags. They allow followers to follow a conversation and join in the discussion on these social media sites. While hashtags can attract people to join in the conversation and make them aware of their favorite businesses’ sales, coupons, and other offerings, they may be less willing to follow along if the hashtags are offensive or confusing.
Business owners who want to use them successfully are advised to utilize words and phrases that are pertinent to their business and friendly in tone. For example, if a business owner wants to let followers know about a big sale that is coming up in the next few days, he or she might use the hashtag of #bigsavings or #excitingsale, or other phrases that will be interesting and inviting to followers.
Avoid Discriminatory Language
Customers who engage their favorite businesses are highly aware of language that could be misconstrued as derogatory or discriminatory. A business owner who jokingly says a sale is for men only, for example, risk offending both men and women with his or her jest. Because a tweet or post is merely typed words, readers often cannot interpret the joking tone that may have been intended to go along with the status update.When a person updates his or her business status, that person is encouraged to use overtly friendly words and avoid wording that could be misunderstood as offensive or discriminatory.
Avoid Swearing or Lewd Language
Social media followers are also disgusted when their favorite businesses use lewd language or cursing. Many people who use these sites hold their preferred companies to high standards; when they witness such vulgarity, they are more likely to respond with anger and disgust. Even more, a business owner who engages in such antics may inadvertently attract less than desirable clientele to his or her business. Rather than risk angering and turning away good customers, business owners may be advised to leave out the vulgarity, dirty jokes, and other lewd language from their posts and tweets.
With social media on the rise, more people are connecting to their favorite companies through this website. Business owners who want to build their brands through social media can do so successfully by following several important rules of etiquette when it comes to posting and tweeting online.
