Great Article- A must read about Online Personal Branding and Jobs/Careers
The rise of companies using the internet to find out information about job seekers and potential candidates is nothing new. They have been doing it for years. News that it might be illegal is interesting, however it will probably not stop companies, recruiters and schools for doing searches. One passage in the article is especially interesting:
However, it remains unclear whether organisations covertly accessing
people’s private web pages or email accounts would constitute a breach of the law. Last week the ICO issued guidance to users of social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo, urging them to take their privacy more seriously. A survey found that although 71% of 14- to 21-year-olds did not want their future employers to look at their profiles on social networking sites, only 40% realised that their online activities could be traced indefinitely.
One of the reasons I started my investigation into Online Personal Branding was that I wanted to get into the internet and wanted to show my understanding and knowledge of the field… even if it was a new and foreign field at the time, I know that proper branding (of a person or a company) can greatly influence perception- for better or worse.
That investigation led to MyOnlineCareerSpace.com; I wanted to help individuals control the way in which they were perceived by companies who may be doing these types of searches while providing information about the modern online job search that previously was left in the hands of those companies who may have been doing the searches in the first place!
