Is Adam Morrison ever going to make it in the NBA?
Coming out of college, Adam Morrison was as highly touted a prospect as there is- his numbers and accomplishments versus NCAA competition were astounding. Seemingly, he had a miracle shot every game/night. As much as his numbers and ESPN highlights contributed to his national recognition, there were the grainy YouTube videos, his quirky appearance and mannerisms contributed to his lore. But the question remains – Is Adam Morrison ever going to make it in the NBA?
Combined in a nice social message about how an individual can overcome and prosper in the face of diabetes he was a perfect package for the ‘next level’. This lead to the highest accolades a collegiate player can aspire: John Wooden Award, NCAA Player of the Year and eventual draft pick.
His success led to commercials… like this one:
What happened following his selection in the NBA Draft gets ‘murky’. His defense on the court was always shaky at best, and he struggled to get his shot off against NBA pros; his offense seemed to have left him. After beginning the year as a starter, he was relegated to the bench. Injuries followed…
…then, another year on the disabled list. A knee injury forced him to miss an entire year. It seemed as though he fell off the face off the earth.
This year, he is back. But will he ever be a player in the NBA? Charlotte decided to extend his contract to give him a chance to show his brilliance, but so far this year, he has shown only modest gains on offense while his defense has not picked up.
My guess is that he is not suspect of ‘too much, too soon’- rather, he is just not that good. If he could get lucky and fall into a situation like Ray Allen on Boston then his defensive liabilities would be overlooked… I don’t think he will be a starter in the league…
